RITRATTI IN BRONZO DALLA MAGNA GRECIA AL CONTEMPORANEO

Rara Avis – Ritratti in bronzo dalla Magna Grecia al contemporaneo è un progetto artistico e di ricerca di Antonio Affidato dedicato a figure che hanno abitato la storia, il mito e l’immaginario della Magna Grecia. Alcmene, Hera, Pitagora, Eracle, Serse, Medusa, Phayllos, Gea e Milone compongono una galleria di nove presenze, differenti per natura e vicenda, accomunate dall’appartenenza a un universo culturale che ha profondamente segnato l’identità del Mediterraneo. Affidato ne affronta il ritratto come esercizio di interpretazione. Il volto non è soltanto fisionomia, ma diventa il luogo nel quale far emergere carattere, tensione e dimensione simbolica del soggetto. Il bronzo ne costruisce la presenza attraverso materia, superficie e patina, mentre elementi e lavorazioni provenienti dall’esperienza dell’oreficeria intervengono come parte del linguaggio plastico.

In questa nuova tappa, la ricerca si concentra sul mito, inteso non come semplice racconto del passato, ma come forma universale capace di attraversare il tempo e continuare a interrogare l’uomo contemporaneo.

Il titolo Rara Avis – espressione latina che indica ciò che è raro, singolare, fuori dall’ordinario — riconduce infine alla natura stessa dei protagonisti: personalità, eroi e divinità che, ciascuno nella propria unicità, hanno lasciato un segno nell’immaginario e nella cultura del mondo antico.

“Il passato, per me, non è mai una dimensione conclusa, è una materia che può essere interrogata, trasformata e restituita attraverso nuovi linguaggi. Rara Avis nasce da questa idea: fare del mito e della memoria della Magna Grecia strumenti attraverso i quali continuare a parlare dell’uomo contemporaneo”.

ANTONIO AFFIDATO

Orafo, scultore e docente presso
l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Catanzaro
e Reggio Calabria

Antonio Affidato, scultore e orafo, nasce a Crotone il 21/10/1994.

La sua ricerca nasce dall’incontro tra formazione accademica, conoscenza delle tecniche della tradizione e sperimentazione dei linguaggi contemporanei. Laureato in Arti Visive – Scultura, presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Catanzaro e l’Accademia di Brera di Milano, conseguendo entrambi i titoli con Lode. Ha approfondito il rapporto tra arte, materia e simbolo, sviluppando una ricerca in cui il bronzo e i metalli preziosi diventano strumenti di rilettura della memoria, del mito e dell’identità mediterranea.

Le sue opere sono state presentate in contesti museali e istituzionali e fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private. Parallelamente all’attività artistica svolge attività didattica e di ricerca nell’ambito dell’alta formazione artistica. Antonio è la seconda generazione dell’azienda orafa “Michele Affidato orafo SRL”, portando avanti il brand sul panorama nazionale e internazionale, con una produzione di gioielli artigianali, in stile magno greco bizantino e gioielli in stile contemporaneo, opere per diversi eventi internazionali come il Festival di Sanremo, i Nastri d’Argento RAI, il Festival del Cinema di Roma e il Taormina Film Festival, realizzando opere per personaggi come Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Francis Ford Coppola, Ennio Morricone, Christofer Lambert, Matthew Modine, Sophia Loren, Pamela Anderson, Octavia Spencer, Richard Gere, Oliver Stone e molti altri.

Affidato realizza diverse opere per Papi, Cardinali, Vescovi, chiese e santuari di tutto il mondo, come per la Madonna Polacca di Chestokowa e la Shire of Our Lady of Czestochowa di Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Realizza diverse opere per la Santa Sede e in particolar modo per Papa Francesco, uno dei più importanti sicuramente è stato quello proveniente dalla Segreteria di Stato Vaticana, dove viene chiamato a realizzare delle opere scultoree che il Papa dona a tutti i Capi di Stato e di Governo provenienti da tutto il mondo, che riceve in Vaticano; Affidato, da qui, entra come artista riconosciuto dalla Santa Sede.

BRONZE PORTRAITS FROM MAGNA GRAECIA TO THE CONTEMPORARY AGE

Rara Avis – Bronze Portraits from Magna Graecia to the Contemporary Age is an artistic and research project by Antonio Affidato dedicated to figures who have inhabited the history, mythology and collective imagination of Magna Graecia. Alcmene, Hera, Pythagoras, Heracles, Xerxes, Medusa, Phayllos, Gaia and Milo form a gallery of nine figures, differing in nature and story yet united by their connection to a cultural universe that has profoundly shaped the identity of the Mediterranean.

Affidato approaches portraiture as an exercise in interpretation. The face is not merely a collection of physical features, but becomes a space in which the subject’s character, tension and symbolic dimension can emerge. Bronze gives shape to each presence through matter, surface and patina, while elements and techniques derived from the artist’s experience in goldsmithing become an integral part of the sculptural language.

In this new stage, the research focuses on myth, understood not simply as a story belonging to the past, but as a universal form capable of transcending time and continuing to question contemporary humanity.

The title Rara Avis—a Latin expression referring to something rare, unique and out of the ordinary—ultimately reflects the very nature of its protagonists: individuals, heroes and deities who, each through their own uniqueness, have left an indelible mark on the imagination and culture of the ancient world.

“For me, the past is never a closed dimension; it is material that can be questioned, transformed and brought back to life through new languages. Rara Avis was born from this idea: to turn the myths and memory of Magna Graecia into tools through which we can continue to speak about contemporary humanity.”

ANTONIO AFFIDATO

Goldsmith, sculptor and lecturer at
the Academies of Fine Arts of Catanzaro
and Reggio Calabria

Antonio Affidato, sculptor and goldsmith, was born in Crotone on 21 October 1994.

His research stems from the encounter between academic training, knowledge of traditional techniques and experimentation with contemporary forms of expression. He graduated with honours in Visual Arts – Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts of Catanzaro and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. He has explored the relationship between art, matter and symbolism, developing an artistic practice in which bronze and precious metals become instruments for reinterpreting memory, myth and Mediterranean identity.

His works have been exhibited in museums and institutional settings and are included in both public and private collections. Alongside his artistic practice, he is also involved in teaching and research within the field of higher education in the arts.

Antonio represents the second generation of the goldsmith company “Michele Affidato Orafo SRL”, carrying the brand forward on the national and international scene. The company produces handcrafted jewellery in the Magna Graecia and Byzantine styles, as well as contemporary jewellery and works created for major international events, including the Sanremo Music Festival, the RAI Nastri d’Argento Awards, the Rome Film Festival and the Taormina Film Festival.

He has created works for personalities including Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Francis Ford Coppola, Ennio Morricone, Christopher Lambert, Matthew Modine, Sophia Loren, Pamela Anderson, Octavia Spencer, Richard Gere, Oliver Stone and many others.

Affidato has created numerous works for Popes, Cardinals, Bishops, churches and shrines around the world, including works dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa and for the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

He has also produced several works for the Holy See and, in particular, for Pope Francis. One of his most prestigious commissions came from the Vatican Secretariat of State, which entrusted him with the creation of sculptures presented by the Pope to Heads of State and Government from around the world during their official visits to the Vatican. Through this commission, Affidato became an artist officially recognised by the Holy See.

Rara Avis – Portraits en bronze de la Grande-Grèce à l’époque contemporaine est un projet artistique et de recherche d’Antonio Affidato consacré à des figures qui ont habité l’histoire, le mythe et l’imaginaire de la Grande-Grèce. Alcmène, Héra, Pythagore, Héraclès, Xerxès, Méduse, Phayllos, Gaïa et Milon composent une galerie de neuf présences, différentes par leur nature et leur histoire, mais unies par leur appartenance à un univers culturel qui a profondément marqué l’identité méditerranéenne.

Affidato aborde le portrait comme un exercice d’interprétation. Le visage n’est pas seulement une physionomie : il devient l’espace dans lequel émergent le caractère, la tension et la dimension symbolique du sujet représenté. Le bronze construit sa présence à travers la matière, la surface et la patine, tandis que les éléments et les techniques issus de l’expérience de l’artiste dans le domaine de l’orfèvrerie s’intègrent pleinement au langage sculptural.

Dans cette nouvelle étape, la recherche se concentre sur le mythe, considéré non comme un simple récit du passé, mais comme une forme universelle capable de traverser le temps et de continuer à interroger l’être humain contemporain.

Le titre Rara Avis — expression latine désignant quelque chose de rare, de singulier et d’extraordinaire — renvoie finalement à la nature même des protagonistes : personnalités, héros et divinités qui, chacun par leur singularité, ont laissé une empreinte indélébile dans l’imaginaire et la culture du monde antique.

« Pour moi, le passé n’est jamais une dimension achevée : c’est une matière qui peut être interrogée, transformée et restituée à travers de nouveaux langages. Rara Avis est né de cette idée : faire du mythe et de la mémoire de la Grande-Grèce des instruments permettant de continuer à parler de l’être humain contemporain. »

ANTONIO AFFIDATO

Orfèvre, sculpteur et enseignant auprès des
Académies des beaux-arts de Catanzaro
et de Reggio de Calabre

Antonio Affidato, sculpteur et orfèvre, est né à Crotone le 21 octobre 1994.

Sa recherche naît de la rencontre entre la formation académique, la connaissance des techniques traditionnelles et l’expérimentation des langages contemporains. Diplômé avec mention en Arts visuels, spécialité Sculpture, auprès de l’Académie des beaux-arts de Catanzaro et de l’Académie des beaux-arts de Brera à Milan, il a approfondi la relation entre l’art, la matière et le symbole. Il a ainsi développé une recherche dans laquelle le bronze et les métaux précieux deviennent des instruments de réinterprétation de la mémoire, du mythe et de l’identité méditerranéenne.

Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans des musées et des institutions et font partie de collections publiques et privées. Parallèlement à son activité artistique, il mène des activités d’enseignement et de recherche dans le domaine de l’enseignement artistique supérieur.

Antonio représente la deuxième génération de l’entreprise d’orfèvrerie « Michele Affidato Orafo SRL », dont il poursuit le développement sur la scène nationale et internationale. L’entreprise réalise des bijoux artisanaux inspirés des styles de la Grande-Grèce et de la tradition byzantine, ainsi que des bijoux contemporains et des œuvres destinées à de grands événements internationaux.

Parmi ces événements figurent le Festival de Sanremo, les prix Nastri d’Argento de la RAI, le Festival du film de Rome et le Festival du film de Taormina.

Il a également créé des œuvres pour de nombreuses personnalités, parmi lesquelles Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Francis Ford Coppola, Ennio Morricone, Christopher Lambert, Matthew Modine, Sophia Loren, Pamela Anderson, Octavia Spencer, Richard Gere, Oliver Stone et bien d’autres.

Affidato a réalisé de nombreuses œuvres pour des papes, des cardinaux, des évêques, des églises et des sanctuaires du monde entier. Parmi celles-ci figurent des œuvres consacrées à la Vierge noire de Częstochowa ainsi que des créations destinées au Sanctuaire national de Notre-Dame de Częstochowa à Doylestown, en Pennsylvanie.

Il a également créé plusieurs œuvres pour le Saint-Siège et, en particulier, pour le pape François. L’une de ses commandes les plus prestigieuses lui a été confiée par la Secrétairerie d’État du Vatican, qui l’a chargé de réaliser des sculptures offertes par le pape aux chefs d’État et de gouvernement du monde entier lors de leurs visites officielles au Vatican.

Grâce à cette importante commande, Affidato est devenu un artiste officiellement reconnu par le Saint-Siège.

Rara Avis – Bronzeporträts von der Magna Graecia bis zur Gegenwart ist ein Kunst- und Forschungsprojekt von Antonio Affidato, das Persönlichkeiten gewidmet ist, die die Geschichte, die Mythologie und die Vorstellungswelt der Magna Graecia geprägt haben. Alkmene, Hera, Pythagoras, Herakles, Xerxes, Medusa, Phayllos, Gaia und Milon bilden eine Galerie aus neun Gestalten. Sie unterscheiden sich in ihrem Wesen und ihren Geschichten, sind jedoch durch ihre Zugehörigkeit zu einem kulturellen Universum miteinander verbunden, das die Identität des Mittelmeerraums nachhaltig geprägt hat.

Affidato versteht das Porträt als eine Form der Interpretation. Das Gesicht ist nicht nur eine Ansammlung äußerer Merkmale, sondern wird zu einem Ort, an dem der Charakter, die innere Spannung und die symbolische Dimension des dargestellten Subjekts sichtbar werden. Die Bronze verleiht jeder Gestalt durch Material, Oberfläche und Patina Präsenz, während Elemente und Bearbeitungstechniken aus der Erfahrung des Künstlers als Goldschmied zu einem wesentlichen Bestandteil der plastischen Sprache werden.

In dieser neuen Phase konzentriert sich die künstlerische Forschung auf den Mythos, der nicht nur als Erzählung aus der Vergangenheit verstanden wird, sondern als universelle Ausdrucksform, die die Zeit überdauert und den Menschen der Gegenwart weiterhin zum Nachdenken anregt.

Der Titel Rara Avis – ein lateinischer Ausdruck für etwas Seltenes, Einzigartiges und Außergewöhnliches – verweist schließlich auf das Wesen der dargestellten Persönlichkeiten: Menschen, Helden und Gottheiten, die durch ihre jeweilige Einzigartigkeit unauslöschliche Spuren in der Vorstellungswelt und Kultur der Antike hinterlassen haben.

„Für mich ist die Vergangenheit niemals eine abgeschlossene Dimension. Sie ist ein Material, das hinterfragt, verwandelt und durch neue Ausdrucksformen wiedergegeben werden kann. Rara Avis ist aus dieser Idee entstanden: die Mythen und die Erinnerung der Magna Graecia zu Instrumenten zu machen, durch die wir weiterhin über den Menschen der Gegenwart sprechen können.“

Goldschmied, Bildhauer und Dozent an den
Akademien der Schönen Künste von Catanzaro
und Reggio Calabria

Antonio Affidato, Bildhauer und Goldschmied, wurde am 21. Oktober 1994 in Crotone geboren.

Seine künstlerische Forschung entsteht aus dem Zusammenspiel von akademischer Ausbildung, der Kenntnis traditioneller Techniken und dem Experimentieren mit zeitgenössischen Ausdrucksformen. Er schloss sein Studium der Bildenden Kunst mit Schwerpunkt Bildhauerei sowohl an der Akademie der Schönen Künste von Catanzaro als auch an der Kunstakademie Brera in Mailand mit Auszeichnung ab. Dabei vertiefte er die Beziehung zwischen Kunst, Material und Symbolik und entwickelte eine künstlerische Praxis, in der Bronze und Edelmetalle zu Instrumenten für die Neuinterpretation von Erinnerung, Mythos und mediterraner Identität werden.

Seine Werke wurden in Museen und institutionellen Kontexten präsentiert und befinden sich in öffentlichen sowie privaten Sammlungen. Neben seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit widmet er sich der Lehre und Forschung im Bereich der höheren künstlerischen Ausbildung.

Antonio repräsentiert die zweite Generation des Goldschmiedeunternehmens „Michele Affidato Orafo SRL“ und führt die Marke auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene weiter. Das Unternehmen fertigt handgearbeiteten Schmuck im Stil der Magna Graecia und der byzantinischen Tradition sowie zeitgenössische Schmuckstücke und Kunstwerke für bedeutende internationale Veranstaltungen. Dazu gehören das Sanremo-Musikfestival, die Filmpreise Nastri d’Argento der RAI, das Filmfestival von Rom und das Taormina Film Festival.

Er schuf Werke für Persönlichkeiten wie Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, Francis Ford Coppola, Ennio Morricone, Christopher Lambert, Matthew Modine, Sophia Loren, Pamela Anderson, Octavia Spencer, Richard Gere, Oliver Stone und viele weitere.

Affidato hat zahlreiche Werke für Päpste, Kardinäle, Bischöfe, Kirchen und Heiligtümer auf der ganzen Welt geschaffen. Dazu gehören Werke zu Ehren der Schwarzen Madonna von Tschenstochau sowie für das Nationalheiligtum Unserer Lieben Frau von Tschenstochau in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Darüber hinaus fertigte er verschiedene Werke für den Heiligen Stuhl und insbesondere für Papst Franziskus an. Einer seiner bedeutendsten Aufträge kam vom Staatssekretariat des Vatikans, das ihn mit der Anfertigung von Skulpturen beauftragte, die der Papst Staats- und Regierungsoberhäuptern aus aller Welt während ihrer offiziellen Besuche im Vatikan überreicht. Durch diesen Auftrag wurde Affidato zu einem vom Heiligen Stuhl offiziell anerkannten Künstler.
